Mr. Gijs van Banning

Mr. van Banning holds the position of Manager Coastal and Marine Systems. He has 25 years experience in flow, wave and sediment modelling, hydraulic engineering and project management. He has worked as a team member and as project manager in a large number of port and coastal projects, mostly with the emphasis on the mathematical modelling of hydrodynamics and morphology. His mathematical model expertise includes models for wave propagation, two and three dimensional flow wave and sediment transport phenomena, coastline development and integrated morphodynamic modelling. He has worked on the development and verification of morphodynamic models, using wind, wave and tide induced currents as a basis. He was involved in the design of the access channel to Barrow-in-Furness , allowing submarines to transit. He was involved as a project manager in the transfer of mathematical models and know-how to Institutes in Germany, Taiwan (R.O.C.) and recently in Malaysia, the design of a Marine Terminal near Jamnagar, India for Reliance Petroleum Industries, a jetty near Lakhigam for Indo Gulf Fertilizers, the extension of a jetty and the protection of an access channel near Wilhelmshaven, Germany. He has been involved in Hurricane modelling and in the set-up of a suite of nested hydrodynamic models for all Dutch waters, starting with a large scale Continental Shelf Model and ending in very detailed models of the Dutch river delta’s. Part of it is the complicated 3D interaction between salt and fresh water requiring layered flow and 3D turbulence.

He was and is responsible for the development and application of a large number of dedicated tide-, wind- and wave driven simulation models all over the world. Mr. Van Banning also focuses on river engineering and water quality issues.
