Mrs. Belinda Kater
Mrs. Kater is a marine ecologist
with more than 15 years of experiences. She was one of the key persons in the
research programme for the Dutch estuary named Western Scheldt and in the set up
of the monitoring programme for the large-scale land reclamation project
Maasvlakte 2 (
extension
Port
of
Rotterdam
). Key qualifications of Mrs. Kater
are eco-morphology (the relation between organisms and their habitat) and
ecotoxicologie (the relation between organisms and contaminants). In 2005 she
wrote a knowledge status report on the area of morphodynamics and ecology, and
the connexion between both fields, for the purpose of getting (better) answers
on questions about relations between (human) impacts and ecological values of
the
Western Scheldt
(The Netherlands).
Mrs. Kater started her career as a
mathematical biologist and developed several models for studying relations
between human impacts and effects on ecological values. For a period of four
years she performed ecotoxicological research at a field station at the
Eastern Scheldt
. Main subject was to develop in-vivo bioassays to assess the toxicity of all
sorts of marine sediments. Later on she worked on the (second) evaluation of the
shellfish policy in the
Netherlands
, were effects of shellfishery on macrobenthos and birds was studied. For Alkyon
she is heading the ecomorphology taskforce.
