Digital Wave Atlas

Digital wave atlas

Wind and wave are important parameters for inland shipping, pleasure crafts and yachts on large lakes like the IJsselmeer in the Netherlands.

Alkyon Hydraulic Consultancy & Research combined their specialist knowledge and wave models for the development of a Digital Wave Atlas. This Wave Atlas can be integrated with the WinGPS navigation software of Stentec Software.

The Wave Atlas is characterised by:

  • Recent bathometric survey data provided by Rijkswaterstaat Directie IJsselmeergebied;
  • 672 computations with the SWAN-wave model;
  • 8 Wind directions;
  • 6 Wind forces (Bft 4-9);
  • Overall results (IJsselmeer and Markermeer) on 200 m grid;
  • 12 detail areas (IJmeer, Gouwzee, Enkhuizen, Lelystad, Val van Urk, Lemmer, Stavoren, etc.) on 40 m grid;
  • Presentation of wave height, wave direction, wave length, wave steepness, wave breaking index;

The atlas can be used to evaluate ship-routes from Amsterdam to Friesland (wind: 9 Bft from north-west) using the following wave maps:

  • Markermeer: wave height and direction and wave breaking
  • Detail IJmeer: wave height and direction and wave breaking
  • Detail Lelystad-South: wave height and direction and wave breaking
  • Northern IJsselmeer: wave height and direction and wave breaking
  • Detail Lelystad-North: wave height and direction and wave breaking
  • Detail Val van Urk: wave height and direction and wave breaking
  • Detail near Lemmer: wave height and direction and wave breaking

The demo version of the Wave Atlas shows results for one wind direction and one wind force.

The Wave Atlas is available on CD-Rom ( 19,90 Euro incl VAT) and can be explored with the same browser you visit this internet page. The CD contains a manual and a user-friendly user interface for making a selection from the more than 2600 available wave maps.
